Can You Install a Gas Cooktop Yourself
No, Queensland reserves gas work for licensed gasfitters, so a householder cannot legally fit a cooktop. The licence rules leave no room for a weekend handyman job.
- Gas work spans fitting, removal, alteration, repairs, servicing, testing and sign-off on a fuel-gas system, its pipework and its joints.
- The same rules cover natural gas and LPG alike.
- An unlicensed connection cannot be certified, and it turns up as a defect when you sell or insure the place.
- Ask to see the gasfitter's licence before anyone touches the pipework.

How a Cooktop, Oven or Heater Gets Connected
The job runs four steps: connect the appliance at its gas point to the manufacturer's instructions, keep the clearances, test every fresh joint, then certify. A gas point is the capped outlet in the wall or bench where an appliance joins the supply. A bench cooktop, a wall oven and a full-height cooker are each plumbed in differently.
The connection
the gasfitter joins the appliance at the gas point, working to the manufacturer's fitting sheet.
The clearances
that sheet sets the distances to the rangehood, the cabinetry and any combustible surface, and we measure the bench to match.
The leak test
every new joint is pressure- and leak-checked before we leave the kitchen.
The paperwork
you receive the compliance certificate when the job is finished. It confirms the work meets the rules. Our gas compliance certificates page explains what that document covers.
If gas reaches your nose at any point, that is a different job: see gas leak repairs for the first moves.

Natural Gas, LPG and Conversions
Three supply checks come before any connection: the vaporisation rate on a bottle supply, the gas meter and its capacity on a piped supply, and the pipe sizing between the two. Fuel gas reaches a home by pipe from a metered street network, or from an LPG cylinder or tank, and each appliance is set up for one of them. Vaporisation is the rate at which liquid LPG in a cylinder turns into gas.
The supply checks cover:
- how much fuel the stored cylinders can boil off, on a bottle supply;
- the meter and the volume it can pass, on a piped supply;
- the pipe sizes between the supply and the bench.
A piped supply adds one formality. The licensee tells the network operator before a whole new gas system goes in, and again where extra demand reaches 100 megajoules per hour or above. The notice lists what is being done and how far demand will climb.
A conversion moves an appliance from natural gas to LPG, or the other way. A cooktop that moves from a natural-gas home to an LPG home needs conversion first, and only where the maker sells the parts for that model. The changeover is gas work, so one of our licensed gasfitters does it and tests the result.

Choosing a Gas Appliance That Fails Safe
A safe gas appliance carries an approval badge under the national gas device scheme, a flame failure device that shuts the gas off, and automatic reignition that relights the burner. Look for these when you shop:
The approval badge
shows the appliance passed the national certification scheme for gas devices.
A flame failure device
cuts the gas if the flame dies.
Automatic reignition
relights the burner instead of letting fuel escape.
An import without the badge cannot be certified here, and we would refuse the install at the bench. Check for the badge before you buy.

Where the New Kitchens Are Going
Building approvals across the suburb ran to 549 extra dwellings over the five years to the last census, 143 of them approved in 2021-22 alone. Estimated population growth ran at 9.6 percent over a similar stretch. Most of that building is apartments.
Most gas cooktop installation work now happens in compact unit kitchens off Sandgate Road. A unit kitchen usually drops a cooktop onto a gas point that already exists. A cottage reno on Buckland Road more often shifts the point while the wall is open anyway.

Costs Beyond the Appliance Itself
Four things drive the quote, none of them the ticket price on the cooktop: the gas point, the line, the appliance type, and the supply checks.
An existing gas point
needs only a short connection.
A new run out from the meter, or a fresh bottle setup,
adds pipe, fittings and hours.
The appliance type
changes the job: four burners, an oven built into the wall, or a cooker with its own oven each connect differently.
Supply checks and any conversion
add testing and parts before the first flame.
Those items sit inside the fixed quote, priced up front, so nothing extra appears on the invoice.

Cooktop Questions From Our Customers
Call (07) 3524 7137Am I allowed to fit a gas cooktop myself?
No, fitting a gas cooktop is licensed gas work in Queensland, and so is certifying it. A householder or handyman cannot legally do the connection, so there are no do-it-yourself steps here.
Can a cooktop in Nundah run on LPG bottles?
Yes, when the appliance is set up for LPG and the bottle storage can boil off fuel fast enough to feed it. Our gasfitters check both before connecting anything in a Nundah kitchen.
Can I convert a natural gas cooktop to LPG?
Yes, where the maker sells conversion parts for your exact model. The changeover counts as gas work, so a licensed gasfitter carries it out and leak-tests the result before you cook.
Do I have to tell my gas supplier about a new cooktop?
No, not for a straight swap onto an existing point. Notice applies only when an entirely new gas system is installed, or where the job adds 100 megajoules an hour or more of demand on a metered supply. The licence holder files it.
Does a cooktop need clearance from walls and the rangehood?
Yes, the clearances from walls, cupboards and the rangehood come from the maker's installation instructions, and the gasfitter measures to them on every Nundah install.
